The shift to a hybrid workforce has brought both opportunities and challenges to insurance companies.

Employees are now working in different environments, and maintaining engagement and connection across teams can be difficult. One effective way to tackle this challenge is by incorporating gamification into your internal communications strategy.

Gamification—using game-like elements in non-game settings—can boost employee engagement, encourage collaboration, and drive participation in your communications.

Here are five ways you can gamify your internal comms to foster a more engaged hybrid workforce.

1. Introduce Recognition and Rewards Programs

Employees are more likely to engage when they feel appreciated. Gamification can help by introducing a points-based system where employees earn points for reading newsletters, engaging in discussions, or sharing helpful information. These points can be redeemed for rewards like gift cards, extra vacation days, or company swag.

Example: Create a leaderboard where employees earn points for reading important communications, participating in surveys, or providing valuable feedback. Recognizing top performers publicly reinforces positive behavior and keeps the competition friendly.

Tip: Ensure that the rewards are meaningful to your employees. Conduct surveys to find out what incentives resonate best with your team.

2. Create Interactive Learning Challenges

In the insurance industry, continuous learning is critical. From new regulations to updated policies, there’s always new information employees need to absorb. Gamify learning by turning training or policy information into interactive challenges, where employees can unlock badges or advance through levels as they complete sections.

Example: Use quizzes and a scoring system that rewards employees for correct answers. Incorporate time-based challenges to create a sense of urgency and competition.

Tip: Break down complex information into bite-sized, manageable pieces of content and make the experience fun with engaging visuals or timed quizzes.

3. Encourage Collaboration Through Team-Based Challenges

Hybrid work environments can sometimes lead to silos, with employees losing touch with one another. Gamification can be a tool to encourage cross-department collaboration through team-based challenges. By creating activities that require teams to work together, you can strengthen relationships and improve communication across the workforce.

Example: Launch a company-wide problem-solving challenge where teams compete to come up with the best solution to a common industry challenge or internal process improvement. Points or rewards can be given to teams that present the best ideas.

Tip: Ensure that teams are mixed, including members from different departments or locations, to encourage collaboration across your hybrid workforce.

4. Incorporate “Streaks” to Encourage Daily Engagement

One of the challenges of hybrid work is maintaining consistent engagement, especially when employees are spread out across different locations. To address this, you can implement a “streak” system, where employees are rewarded for regular engagement over a period of time. This could involve checking in on an internal platform, completing daily tasks, or participating in daily polls or quizzes.

Example: Set up daily or weekly goals within your internal communication platform and reward employees for keeping up a streak of consecutive days of participation. Rewards could range from digital badges to actual prizes after reaching milestone streaks.

Tip: Make sure these tasks don’t feel like chores. Keep them fun and light to avoid creating additional pressure on employees.

5. Host Virtual Competitions and Events

In a hybrid work environment, it’s important to create opportunities for employees to connect, even if they can’t be together in person. Virtual competitions and events are a fun and engaging way to bring employees together and build camaraderie.

Example: Host a trivia competition with questions related to company history, the insurance industry, or even pop culture. Employees can compete individually or in teams, with winners receiving recognition or prizes.

Tip: Make sure to offer flexible event times so that both in-office and remote employees can participate. Keep the competition light and fun to foster a sense of community.
