Engaging Gen X municipal deskless employees, who often work in roles like public safety, utilities, and public works, requires a tailored approach to meet their communication needs.

Born between 1965 and 1980, this group has witnessed the digital revolution but values straightforward, reliable, and practical communication. Here are some effective tips to connect with them. 

1. Use Technology Wisely, but Don’t Overcomplicate

Gen X employees are tech-savvy, having navigated the shift from analog to digital in their careers. However, they prefer communication tools that are easy to use. Platforms with clean interfaces and simple navigation work best. Tools like mobile apps for municipal updates or SMS alerts can bridge the gap while respecting their need for simplicity.

Offering opportunities to mentor younger employees or take on leadership roles in key projects can further enhance their engagement. Let them know their contributions are valued and vital to the organization’s success.

Gen X employees appreciate having their voices heard, especially in a field as dynamic as municipal work. Provide channels for feedback and actively encourage dialogue.
